As a clinical psychologist, Daniel has been trained to work therapeutically with people who have a wide range of psychiatric conditions. Having lived with Type 1 diabetes for over 32 years, Daniel possesses first-hand experience regarding the challenges of this chronic condition.

Sessions available in Cape Town or via Zoom. Today, Daniel practices diabetes-focussed psychotherapy, using evidenced based approaches to help people with diabetes to thrive. Daniel works with children, adolescents and adults who have diabetes (Type 1 and 2); he also works with families when needed.

Daniel is also deeply passionate about the brain-body connection. Therefore, in addition to diabetes work, Daniel provides neuropsychological reports and court testimony for people with brain-based disorders.

Diabetes-Focussed Therapy and Coaching

As a Type 1 Diabetic of over 30 years, Daniel has an in-depth understanding of how psychological factors can affect your ability to thrive. These are some of the issues that he addresses in children, adolescents and adults who have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes:

Depression, Anxiety and other psychological disorders that are linked to diabetes (did you know that 50% of all diabetics also experience symptoms of depression?).

Diabetes burnout.

Denial, avoidance and “non-compliance”.

General coaching to help achieve diabetes related goals.

Treatment for diabetes-related eating disorders

Therapy for diabetes-related sexual dysfunction.

Treatment of needle phobias.

Hypoglycaemia phobias (fear of going low) and hypoglycaemia unawareness (where you don’t realize that you’re going low).

Therapy to target barriers against weight loss and lifestyle change

  • Please be aware that our psychotherapy fees at times exceed medical aid rates, which may necessitate co-payments. Therapy sessions are available at our Kloof Street office or online via Zoom.
  • Daniel is contracted with most medical aids and is able to facilitate PMB applications, where appropriate. Kindly liaise with Lynette for more information in this regard.

Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological assessment involves the evaluation of brain functioning through structured and systematic behavioural observation. This provides diagnostic clarification and insight into the functional impact of the disorder. Services offered include:

  • Medico-legal assessments and reports for legal teams who require expert testimony;
  • Assessment of cognitive difficulties secondary to diabetes;
  • Aviation assessments as per SACAA requirements;
  • Functional assessments of brain injuries, stroke, substance-use disorders and neurological disorders;
  • ADHD assessments;
  • Dementia diagnostics;
  • Forensic assessments and testimony;
  • Curatorship assessments; and
  • Assessment of the impact of general psychiatric conditions.
